Meet the Team
SWE Tech Team 2019
We are members of the Society of Women Engineers Tech Team, a group of twelve women in a variety of class-levels and engineering disciplines. Each year, Tech Team chooses a problem facing the residents of South Bend and aims to develop an innovative engineering solution. This year, we hope to address lead contamination within household environments; we are hoping that our solutions can be cost-effective and simple so that they are feasible options for almost any homeowner. We feel that this is an important problem because lead poisoning is preventable and most frequently affects young children. We hope to raise awareness within the City and provide them with a comprehensive list solutions.

Annalena Bellm (Civil Engineering – Class of 2021)
My name is Annalena Bellm and I am one of the co-leaders of this year’s Tech Team. I am a
Civil Engineering Major planning on double minoring in German and Corporate Practice for
Engineers. As a South Bend resident, I am excited to continue working with the City to help
mitigate lead contamination in neighborhood homes. Outside of Tech Team, I participate in my
Welsh Family Hall Council (Go Whirlwinds!) in the social committee and in various intramural
sports. I am also conducting research in Professor Antonio Simonetti’s lab in water
contamination on campus. I am also part of Civil Engineering Society, and Society for
Women Engineers.

Emma Ascolese (Computer Science - Class of 2021)
I am a Computer Science major planning on minoring in Engineering for Corporate
Practice. I’ve always been eager to help people and I’m excited to pair that passion with
a love for problem solving and a set of technical skills. Outside of Tech Team, I am a tour
guide for the visitor’s center and a group leader for CS (computer science) for Good. I am
looking forward to learning a lot and creating innovating solutions this semester.

Emory Smith (Computer Engineering - Class of 2021)
I am a Computer Engineer with a passion for using engineering for good. As someone who calls South Bend “home,” I am invested in working to make meaningful contributions to our community. In addition to these passions, I also enjoy running, learning Chinese, and cooking. At Notre Dame, I am involved in the Society of Women Engineers, Aquatic Resources for Kids, and the Notre Dame Running Club. My favorite thing about Tech Team is that we have the opportunity to interact with the South Bend community and put our studies to practical use.
Nicole Warren (Computer Science - Class of 2021)
My name is Nicole, and I am a Computer Science major with a passion of using engineering to help others. Outside of Tech Team I am involved in Engineers Without Borders, Society of Women Engineers, Notre Dame International, and Celebration Choir, and am also a volunteer instructor at South Bend Code School, where I help kids aged 7-12 with coding exercises and projects. I am really excited for the semester and can’t wait to see what this group of girls can achieve.
Stacy Manrique (Computer Science - Class of 2021)
My name is Stacy Manrique and I am a sophomore studying Computer Science. Apart from Tech Team,
I am heavily involved with the Institute for Latino Studies, the Media Industry Club, and the Themed
Entertainment Association. As I learn more and more in my CS classes, I often think about how I can apply
my developing technical skills to help others and to address topics I am passionate about, such as access to
quality education for all and the intersection between technology, media, and entertainment. I am beyond
thrilled to be a part of Tech Team this year and to be working alongside magnificent women engineers to
create change in the South Bend community.

Meghan Griffin (Chemical Engineering- Class of 2022)
My name is Meghan Griffin and I am member of the 2018-19 SWE Tech-Team, additionally
serving as a technical tools specialist. I am a freshman majoring in Chemical Engineering and
planning to minor in Theology. I am really looking forward to implementing facets of
engineering, science, and technology into a project that will improve the health and safety of
South Bend residents. When I’m not working with Tech-Team, I am an advocate for the
Alzheimer’s association, working to spread awareness and raise money for research and care.
On the weekends, I love volunteering with Alzheimer’s and dementia patients and often spend
Saturday mornings with girls in my dorm, Lewis Hall, at nearby nursing facilities. My favorite
pastime during the weekdays is to participate in the Notre Dame running club as a
distance runner.

Grace Kulin (Computer Engineering— 2022)
My name is Grace Kulin and I am a freshman computer science major at Notre Dame and a
sophomore mathematics major at Saint Mary’s College. I am from Detroit, where our
community faces similar lead issues, so working on lead mitigation in South Bend is a particularly exciting project for me. My priority has always been to help others, so being able to put my
technical skills to use for the safety of others through Tech Team is very important to me. Outside of Tech Team, I am involved with First Year Engineering Council at ND and Sustainability
Committee at Saint Mary’s College.

Maia Nieves (Computer Science- Class of 2021)
I am Maia Nieves, a sophomore Electrical Engineering major from Trinidad and Tobago. I
wanted to be a part of the SWE Tech Team because I have a great desire to put the knowledge
I gain in the classroom to use by serving others, and what better way to achieve this than
being with other female engineers who feel the same! Outside of Tech Team and classes, I am
a part of Mercy Works in which I tutor at De Paul Academy and and am involved with childcare
at Hope Ministries.I am really passionate about being a positive impact in places that could
use it, and so I am excited to see what our team can do to contribute to less incidents of
lead poisoning.
